Friction hoists

Friction hoists are designed for rock hoisting, quick and safe hoisting people, transportation of timber , mining equipment and materials. Inspection and repair of shaft reinforcement and lining is also performed by means of mine hoists.

Friction hoists are divided according to loading level of head ropes  by the action of end force on the mine hoist. There are single-rope and multi-rope (up to eight ropes of carrying set) hoists which can be equipped both with geared and gearless drives.

To hoist heavy loads from deep mines by means of bucket, cage and single conveyance counterweight hoisting, multi-rope mine hoists are mainly used. Single-rope friction hoists  are notable for compact design and narrow width. These hoists, however, are not used in mine construction, but only in some auxiliary hoists of operating mines.

Friction hoists are located directly above the mine shaft, on tower headframe (of MR type (multi-rope)) or installed in surface building at a certain distance from the shaft (CGP type hoists (cylindrical ground pulleys)). Сircuit design and layout of mine hoists of various standard sizes of CP-series are identical to MR-series hoists, but the design of their units is more perfect. Multi-rope mine hoists of MR-series are equipped with spring loaded pneumatic brake. CP-series hoists are equipped with hydraulic disc brakes.

Multi-rope hoists can be equipped with one and two engines (depending on selection of the mine hoist and calculations performed) and two types of brakes: radial shoe or hydraulic disc ones.

The process of mine hoists design starts with study and verification of initial technical requirements submitted by a customer. Uralmashplant engineering center is equipped with modern software, which allows us to reduce the cycle of mine hoists design and increase the efficiency and quality of the design.

The next stage is the calculation of loads on mine hoist mechanical equipment, drives and brakes. We pay particular attention to this process. The specialists of engineering calculations and analysis center perform calculations for static, dynamic and fatigue strength of mine hoists equipment, by means of modern software platforms, using finite element method. Engineering calculations allow us to simulate processes and operation and identify the areas of maximum stresses, fatigue limit of a part, predict the service life of mine hoists.


Mine hoists parts are domestically manufactured by Uralmashplant, including the use of the advanced machining centers by leading global manufacturers. The materials used for manufacturing of main units and parts of mine hoists are similar or surpass the known analogues. Every part of mine  hoist is controlled at all stages of designing and manufacturing. We use a number of original designs and process solutions in сourse of manufacturing of our structures.


We test all manufactured mine hoists at a specialized workbench with the participation of representatives of customer company in compliance with the developed program and methodology.
